System Planning Overview

System Planning Overview

AUTOSOL recommends that you take the time to plan your installation, as it will help you determine the system architecture and system requirements.

ACM Deployment

As you are planning your installation, consider the following:

Number of Devices and Items

The number of devices and number of items to be advised play a critical role in the system requirements. The size of your system must be calculated first to determine hardware system requirements. AUTOSOL Communication Manager® (ACM) may be installed on a computer with the minimum hardware specifications, but as more devices are added, system requirements will increase.

Amount of Historical Data and Output Type

The system must be able to accommodate the amount of historical data collected and kept.

Server Configuration

ACM allows flexible server configurations. For instance, a small system could easily be placed on a single machine, while a larger installation may have a separate database machine and even multiple machines running ACM with their own database.

Server Client Configuration

ACM has two parts: the Client and Server. Both components can be installed on the same machine or on separate machines. It may make sense to install the ACM client on terminal machines for operators if there are multiple operators or restricted access to the server machine.

Redundancy Considerations

ACM and Database servers may be added to facilitate redundancy.

ACM Installations Examples

Type of ACM Installation

Servers

SQL Database

Type of ACM Installation

Servers

SQL Database

Simple ACM Installation

Single Windows machine with ACM Server

Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Express installed on the same machine with ACM

Medium ACM Installation

Dedicated ACM Machine

Single database supported by one instance of Microsoft SQL Server

Large ACM Installation

Multiple Dedicated ACM Machines

Multiple databases supported by one or more instances of Microsoft SQL Server

Redundant ACM Installation

Redundant ACM Pair

Multiple databases supported by one or more instances Microsoft SQL Server

As long as the ACM Server and Microsoft SQL Server machines can communicate with one another, they can be installed on separate machines.
